Summary

Ever wish you could ask a document or system a question, locate a lost file in Google Drive, or track down a past conversation in Slack? You’re not alone. With the avalanche of content being created by organizations every day, it’s easy to get lost in the chaos of it all. As a result, it’s often easier to duplicate content than find the original. However, this can lead to vital information and insights being overlooked or missed.

To combat this challenge, Cribl partnered with Atolio, a leading AI-powered search provider. The result? Cribl employees are now able to find information quickly and easily—regardless of where it is located. On top of this, they are able to see who is working on what and engage with subject experts more effectively.

Challenge

Since launching in 2018, Cribl, the Data Engine for IT and Security, has grown rapidly from 3 employees to now over 600. However, as growth soared, so too did the struggle to find information, “tracking down information felt like searching for a needle in a haystack – it could be hiding in Confluence, a Jira ticket, a Slack thread, or a Google doc,” explains Ledion Bitincka, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Cribl.

One of Cribl’s core values is Insatiably Curious, so it was crucial that the team could access information to allow them to self-serve, experiment, and figure things out on their own, but the tools they had in place made that impossible, “Even the most motivated people will give up when tooling makes it difficult or painful to find information,” explains Ledion.

“We knew we needed to find a solution to help our teams access the right information, regardless of where it was stored or who created it. That’s what led us to Atolio,” Ledion adds.

We started to see spikes in user tickets reporting issues finding or accessing information. Our goal in IT is to provide tools that make people's lives easier, not add to their frustrations, so we were determined to fix this issue," explains Steve Litras, Senior Director of IT and Security at Cribl.

Solution

Initially, Cribl looked at tool consolidation as a solution, but it didn’t fit with its culture of giving employees freedom of choice. As Ledion and the Engineering team had already been looking into Atolio, it felt like a natural choice.

“Rather than restricting tools, we wanted to make it easier to find information across them. Atolio not only did that brilliantly, but crucial for us, it helped connect people with the right subject experts and content creators to facilitate better collaboration and knowledge sharing,” says Steve.

For Cribl, deploying Atolio across its business has been pretty straightforward, with the team particularly enjoying the collaborative partnership they have developed:

"Collaborating with Atolio since the design partner days has been fantastic. No matter what we've brought to the team, nothing has been a problem, especially when creating custom integrations, so our information ends up exactly where we need it, whether that's Bitbucket or Jira, etc."

“I’ve run other search engines in the past, and the majority of the time, they have been difficult to set up, configure and manage. I didn’t have any of these issues with Atolio. It simply plugged in and worked. It’s amazing.” adds Steve. Cribl prioritizes data security above all else. So, being able to run Atolio entirely within its Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment means the company can maintain high performance levels while always ensuring no data is shared externally.

“Being able to run Atolio within our own AWS environment provides us with an extra layer of protection and allows us to operate with complete peace of mind,” explains Ledion.

Results

  • All employees have one place to find information.
  • Faster ticket resolution and problem-solving.
  • Teams that are self-serving, engaged, and productive.
  • A valuable knowledge repository for everyone.

"Atolio has completely levelled the playing field across the whole company. Whether you have been here for years or have just joined, you will always have access to the same information to get up to speed quickly."
